Paracord Fusion Ties Volume One has no apparent reason for being. Oh, don't get me wrong, the pages are readable, the photographs excellent for having been made by the author while he ties knots, but beyond the asthetic value of this book, it has none. * Photographs are sharp and attractive. They could have been more useful if completed projects were shown front and back instead of just a single view. * The book presents the knotting in a sequential manner starting with simple and building to complex. * There are more than two dozen projects ranging from basic to complex mixtures of knots. * Photographs jump back and forth showing some knots inverted compared to the previous photo in the set which is more confusing than helpful. * Text is the only hint to what is going to happen or what has just happened to the knots. Good line drawings would be better. Combining the same text with good line drawings would make this book instructional. Show, don't tell. * The author makes up his own names for a number of common knots. Just one example is the traditional "lanyard knot" which is renamed in this book the "diamond" knot. Not helpful * Each knot or project is preceded with a list of component parts. However, describing all the components as "Historical Knot" without further explanation is less than useful. If this component of each project is included, it should include all parts and, in the case of "Historical Knot", what the knot is and what makes it historical. As a former sailor I have quite a bit of experience tying knots, and perhaps that is why I don't care for this book. However, I've listed what I think are some of the major drawbacks of Paracord FustionTies Volume One. Maybe this book was written for people who have never tied anything more taxing than shoe laces, but even so, it is a far cry from a real instruction manual. There are much better books available on the topics of knot tieing and paracord tieing than this one. If you want to learn how to do it, find one of them.
This book is obviously written by a man passionate about ties and eager to share. I did find most of it was difficult to follow - I think more expansive photos showing the more of the big picture would be good. I am having much better luck with internet tutorials. This book is geared more for decorative ties than survival and practical uses. Some ideas on how to use some of the items would also be helpful (what do you do with a strap or bar?). Also, all of these are made with 450 paracord versus the “standard†550 I normally use. The author considers the 450 paracord better for the creations in the book.
JD's style for demonstrating tying these knots on his YouTube channel "Tying It All Together" is perfect: not too fast, no irritating voiceover, and a polite pause at every step to clearly show what has happened and how things should look. The book gives up a little bit to video. Being able to see how the hands go from step to step helps more than you might expect, but still the book does a very good job of showing the pauses. Sometimes you have to peer at a photo for a minute to figure out what happened...but nothing has come up indecipherable, so it must be working, right?Ever since I figured out how to make these fusion ties, I sometimes whip out a couple while watching TV. My mom was so interested in them I invented a new one (really just a narrow hand-woven band with a tearaway core for rapid deployment), wrapped it and a copy of the book in a box and sent them to her for her birthday. THAT's how highly I regard the book: it's good enough to give to my mom.
This is absolutely the best book I've come across so far on knot tying. I'm only giving 4 stars because some of the directions (specifically the pictures) leave some direction to the imagination. Meaning it is difficult, at a least as a beginner like myself, to see the complete movement of the cord direction - example: which cord is going where. If the picture of the whole cord were shown instead of leaving the bight or loop out of the photo it would take less trial and error. There is also some change in orientation from one photo to the next that makes it harder to follow. Overall, great book on knots.
I am sure it is a good book, just really wasn't what I was looking for. I was looking for a very simple step by step for beginners with simple projects This one says book 1, but I think it would be better for someone who has some experiences with paracord ties. Someday maybe I will work my way into it.
I love making these knots, but there are just a couple of things missing. 1st, are the terminations for buckles and other types of connecters. I would like to make badge lanyards, and the hobby stores sell the plastic clasps, but these projects all feature ball and loop connections. 2nd, are the wraps for knife handles. These may be in a follow up edition, and if they are, then I guess I will have to get that one next. This is a great way to relieve boredom and make something attractive and useful at the same time.
Great book. even better photos !! you have to learn the rope lingo, which makes sense..... much better than..... "take the end that is in your left hand, loop it over and around the other one.... now, take the other end of that first one, and put it over and under and then through that tiny hole.... then gently place your right foot on the loose end of the second one....... pull snugly and there you have it..!"The glossary of terms is very informative and helpful !! The books arrived in perfect condition!! no bends or dings.... nice.I bought 2, one for me and one for a friend's son.... he plays High School Football, and I'm sure he'll make a few things for his groupies....Speedy delivery too !!
